Where’s my Applause?

First column ko under the name "Refresh," at last may column na me...

Man, the dominant species of this planet has always survived because of his wits. Fire made caves warmer and food more nutritious, the wheel made moving mountains feel like a walk in the park, and the microchip made the world into one global village. However, these changes were not always met with blaring trumpets, velvet ropes, and red carpets. Technology has always had its fair share of rotten Easter eggs thrown its way.

Over the years, eyebrows continued to rise as people met everyday change with caution and skepticism. Villagers burned witches for practicing dark magic – a term more known today as chemistry. The oldies were scandalized as John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison strummed their guitars. And Satan has manifested his Earthly presence in the form of the boob tube. With all the said examples, it would have been inevitable for the researchers to turn scornful eyes on other technologies as well.

Nowadays, the television isn’t the only one to be subpoenaed whenever a death occurs in a nearby neighborhood. There are the cell phones that fry our brains and shrink our balls whenever we make a phone call to mom. There are the calculators, whose improvement is inversely proportional to the arithmetic skills of college students. There are these computer games that give us the freedom to kill old ladies for driving too slow. The list goes on: from exploding compact disks to cancerous sweetening agents – both inescapable necessities for some people today.

The question has just been waiting to be asked: have we been enslaved by our own technology? Victims of our own success? For as technology continues to improve – so does its complexity. It would take seven steps to program a microwave to defrost a pound of fish, four steps to set your cell phone to silent mode, and five steps to save this article and shut down the computer. For people who don’t bother to read the manual, the world has become one big puzzle. Reason enough for multimillion dollar technical support industries to be established. But who cares, more jobs for us Mapuans, right?

On a different light, there are some people who view technology as a god-sent gift. Video games are said to heighten the senses and bestow us a handful of skills. Television and radio give a whole new different meaning to renaissance. Cell phones make dad’s Saudi job seem like a walk across the street. Ultimately, it would be how we use the technologies that would judge their worth.

I don’t know about you, but whenever I feel like watching some people shoot each other, I cook some popcorn in the microwave and use my cell phone to text some friends to come over. After the movie, we boot up the PC and try to hack each other’s heads off. When study time comes, we pull out our calculators and integrate the hyperbolic cosine of ten times pi faster than Aristotle ever could. As for the people who continue to despise calculators but continue to use them, you better get a slide rule.

A shoutout to all my friends and family. Wazup!? To my editors, thank you for your patience. And to everyone else, I hope you like my spanking hot and brand new column, refresh. Just a little something something from the proverbial waters of my incredibly saturated mind. Fried Circuitry

The Builder's Dream

In the depths of his mind there exists,
a shadow behind a thick black mist.
A sight only seen by his mind's eye.
He lifts his pen and starts with a sigh.

Dots make a line, lines make a figure.
Shades and smudges highlight each feature.
From beam to beam he draws the foundation.
His masterpiece then starts its formation.

Stone after stone, the thing is built,
Forged and fired: rivets, ratchets and stilts.
Foot after foot, the structure starts to rise,
and soon becomes a marvel to our eyes.

Months pass and his job is done.
He worked hard but he sure had fun.
To think this thing built to the most extreme,
was just once the builder's dream.

Mapua at 82, Viva Mapua, Yehey!

Kanina may fireworks na naman sa school. Parang mino moa... maganda siya. Hehe.

Free ako the whole day, attendance lang and stuff. Kaya lang bukas Sese day, I doubt kung papayag si sir Sese na walang class...

Bago na calcu ko, kahapon ko binili.

Nung kumain ako sa Tokyo Tokyo, classmate ko pala sa mechanics ang nag serve sakin...wa nagulat ako.

Libre na namana dinner namin kanina... courtesy of mapua world. Viva Mapua... hehe... I love my job. Parang alumni night kasi un, meet and greet. Nandun si Oscar B. Mapua, Bayani Fernando... at iba pang mga mayayaman na Mapuan.

Di pa rin kami nagpapansinan... I doubt kung magpapansinan pa kami... ever. Hehe... Pero I dont care... sinasabi ko lang for the record.

Builder na kasama ko the whole day... super saya. Nag Marvel vs Capcom kami sa office. Tapos Giga Wing... Tapos nag starbucks kami nina Melissa ang Ate Anna and Armand and Sherwin and.... un lang. Tapos picture taking ulit sa bagong "Mapua world Tower." With Red Carpet and all. Stayed till gabi - un na nga ung free dinner.

Marami pa akong utang na articles, bukas ko na gawin.

Ended the day with a few Dota games with roomate Ian. Win pa rin lahat. Enchantress na fave character ko pero medyo boring na siya kasi siya nalang lagi. Iba naman. Pwede si Razor. Basta ranged ok sakin.

Hmmm, ano pa? Well wala na... goodnight... bukas naman.

For the record din, Foundation ng Mapua: January 25, 1925 daw sabi ni sir George.

Ok, bb! gg! kk?

Monster Weekend Adventure

"We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospection."

Have I got a story to tell! Yow yow yow yeah! A happy blog for a change. Hehe! Okeys, due to popular demand, here's what I've been up to the last couple of days.

Prologue

Last friday, lets see... that's January 12 (daytime... not 2 in the morning as my last entry says) I got an anonymous tip that the pyro Olympics are still ongoing and two coutries are scheduled to put up a show that night. So its friday and even though I still have scheduled classes the next day I gave the pyro Olympics a shot. After all, I wont be seing that kind of display until next year, that is if they're going to set the schedule on January again.

So after deciding to go through with it, and after meeting up with Carina (who turned out to be the anonymous texter, dont ask) and Nang Trix (that's ate trix for non-ilonggos) we were off to the Mall of Asia to get glimpse of this so called greatest show on... was it earth, asia, of all time? ... ... anyways - you get the idea.

It took us a few minutes to flag down a jeepney and a few more to reach Beundia... (uhm, yeah... we started from DLSU). Next we needed to ride one of those Multicabs.... mini jeepneys actually. At that time, these blue, little critters seemed to be the only way to get to where we were going and a lot of people were on a chaotic rampage just to get one - or so we thought. After joining the chaos and finally pushing our way to get some seats, we found out that there was actually a long line of people which extended for almost half a city block (no exaj). While we zoomed off into the sunset... the people were waving their fists in disbelief.

Just a Sampler

That little accident with the line was just the start of our misadventures. After saying goodbye to all those angry folks, we laughed all the way to MOA (which was an awful lot because of the freakish traffic jams caused by all the fireworks hype). Upon arrival, that was about 7:30pm (show starts at 8:00). We decided to do a little grocery. And since we were in a hurry... we were to buy only the absolute bare necessities. Being with two girls, this meant hair products, a few pieces of food... and those things girls wear when... yeah... yes... ok... lost myself there. Hehe. With that said, I can now say that I could tell the difference between a pad, a liner, a regular liner, a regular pad, a regular pad with wings, and a hyper absorbent regular pad with wings... hmmmm... I sure hope that I'm not making any bit of sense... but you get the picture.

Fifteen minutes before showtime, we decided to get a pizza. We asked the people making the stuff how long it would take to prepare a large pizza. They said 8 minutes. Well that, plus 5 minutes in line, 3 minutes deciding which pizza to get, and about 8 more minutes to actually go outside and view the fireworks.... and about 10 minutes trying to get through the sea of people viewing the fireworks meant that we missed the first show. Damn!

But no worries, another hour from now there would be another show, and this time we wont miss it. We hauled our pizza, found a nice open area, sat on the pavement and had our own little picnic. A little while longer and the fireworks started... I will be describing the show in the next paragraph.

WOW!

After the show... we were addicted to fireworks. We just had to see the how our country would do against china the next day. We were determined to show up... no matter what.

And oh... even though the show ended at around 10, we could leave until about 1am... too many people, to few transportation. Sigh... but it was freakin worth it.

Setting New Records

Here's the fun part. So the next day (that's a saturday January 13), we were still psyched up to go on our second day of fireworks.... waaa... im sleepy... continue ko nalang later... at least may nagawa na me... hehe... (bitin muna! Nyaahahahahahahhaa....)

ok... so im back.... Jan 17 na ngayon 12:56am... hehe. Where was I?

The second time around, we were already expecting the traffic, and the long line and nang Steph was also with us. So we decided to take a taxi. It just so happens that there's none to be found! The ones that we do manage to stop aren't going anywhere near MOA. That was frustrating. Since it was almost 730 and we havent left Lasal yet, we decided to walk a little bit until could we get a ride. Still none of the drivers are willing to take us. Seems like the very act of mentioning the word MOA sends shivers through their spines. So we kept waling... until we reached harrison plaza (brings back memories... February 20-something, last year). Still no one stops. We were overtaking a lot of cars even though we were just walking. It was one hell of a traffic jam. We kept on walking... until we reach Roxas Blvd. We kept on walking until we reached the Cultural Center of the Philippines. We kept on walking until we reached star city. Almost halfway there, we realized... are we ever getting a ride? Are we really going to walk all to way to the Mall of Asia? Answer - we did.

It was like the end of the world! Cars abandoned in the road. People standing on the roof of their vehicles. Bridges overflowing. A whole field full of people, each with their own blanket, tent, kettle, plates - everything save the kitchen sink. everyone was walking, horns were honked, bikes speeding past, police dogs on the prawl... its was the day after friday alright... and all the Filipinos were edging to watch their own country perform.

Oh, back to us. When we finally reached the open field of MOA, we saw all the people camped out there and decided to get closer to the water - where the fireworks will be launched. It was almost 830 and we were joking that the Filipinos were the first to perform - because they were already late, Filipino time. As we were walking, we reached an area where there was less people and less obstacles... whoose... it started. And we saw one of the greatest shows ever.

Turns out china was the first to perform and the Filipinos, still keen observers of Filipino time started at about 1030. So in between those times, we just sat under the stars and talking and eating everything that's being sold there. That was one of the most wonderful experiences ever! Ill post the pics when I get them. After, we walked around MOA almost twice, trying to look for a place to eat, since almost all the restos were already full or closed. I never expected all the restaurants in that super huge mall to be filled all at once. We were left with no choice but to fall in line for almost an hour (ok exaj there) in one of the McDonald's there. We ordered take-out and had one of our picnics again in fron of National Bookstore. As it was turning out, MOA was one big picnic are.

Alas, we were full and had to get back home... ann guess what... we walked all the way to taft again. What a night! What a night! But it was freakin hell worth it. Thanx guys... :D

When the Demons Come at Night

Its another one of those nights were I'm up to my neck with my homework and duties that I decided it was too much and I have to stop and take a break. Well, not necessarily any break, because after this I'm going to straight to the old lumpy sack.

After a few months of utter silence, I'm here once again - talking to the shadows on the wall and thinking how it sucks to be me. Its not like I'm going through one of my award winning dramatic episodes again, I'm just here to kill some time - which I don't really have a lot of. A few articles to edit here and there, a few posters waiting to be done, a banner or two, a few pages of homework, and the oracle which was due a few weeks ago. Damn, sometimes I wonder how I got myself into these tangles. Still the good guy huh?

What? Just a few more rants... okay. Speaking of which, my column ID is due tomorrow- in a couple of hours actually... and I still don't have any idea what to call it. I fried my brains out trying to find something catchy to call my little old corner in the school's publication - but to no avail. Hmmm... here's a few ideas... to... ... ... ... name a few (hehe): Redline, breaking point, glitch, 360 degrees, storm bolt, sentry, cypher, monotone, gradient, edge, blitz, techno blend, vistro... hell, the list goes on an on. Still, they all seem to suck! I hate making this decision, not when I'm too distracted with school. Yes, school is one big distraction! No more playstation, less movies, less fun, I hate school! (Here we go again) At least we only have 9 weeks to go before summer! Haha, then I might be able to finish my final fantasy XII game.

My memory problem is getting worse. Its either I really forget these things or I just wasn't paying any attention back then. Wow, I can't believe I forgot her blog address (that is if she hasn't changed it yet). Well, I don't really care, at least that's one more connection severed.

I miss my friends, I have to admit, being independent has too many downsides to be a good thing. You come to class alone, sit in one corner alone, try to understand the lesson alone, study alone. Sure, you could get a seat mate to teach you a few things or talk about a few topics, but its not just the same like hanging out and laughing out with the old crew over a few cones of ice cream and french fries. Tonix, chen, cam, and... yes, her too. What would it take to get back with you guys without me feeling like hell all over again? Come to think of it, its hell with or without you guys... so why not rather spend hell with you?

I dunno, chen's wearing makeup now that she's got a boy friend. Tonix lost his voice, probably from shouting too much. Cam's still doing SA work in the com lab. Nines probably feeling lonely like me. Mek, still stoic as ever. Maki, Rachel, haven't seen them lately, still around probably. Cris and the rest of the powerhouse, still one big circle of really smart friends. Uhm, hanna... well I think she likes pink now.
Hmmm, other friends... too many to mention - their out there... doing.... stuff.

For the record: I think it just sucks when you guys text me only when you want something from me. Sorry for the delays... your OTs and other stuff are coming soon. Dont you worry.

I heard from a song in the radio this morning, "im better at hellos than goodbyes." Well, I leave it at that. It really sucks to "fall out of love," as sir Feddie puts it. Sometimes I wish that I would just stick to the path I choose and not swerve and slide all over the god damn highway. My second big mistake. My, my, my... love just isn't my cup of tea. That's what I get for bashing on my PS2 controller instead on my cellphone last vacation. *sight* Aw, miss you g...
